Harry and Meghan Netflix series released on Thursday, has been one of the most anticipated television spectacles of the year this is more media phenomenon than documentary.
Royal watchers have been eagerly awaiting for the series, which is directed by Liz Garbus, although Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, gave interview to Oprah Winfrey last year. The relationship with Britain’s royal family was discussed, and Meghan said she once contemplated suicide. Prince Harry has also given many similarly candid interviews, including with James Corden.
The series starts with an onscreen message emphasizing its authenticity. This is the first account of Harry and Meghan’s story, a never before seen this personal archive. Members of the royal family declined to comment about this.
After the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September the documentary lands in a changed royal landscape. King Charles III – Harry’s father – is due to be inauguration next May. Three more episodes will be released on 15 December.
Harry’s war continues with news media
The first episode tells us the story of Harry and Meghan falling in love, but it is also criticizes the UK news media.
Harry said that the photographer have always had an impact on his life. Although he has few memories from his early childhood of his mother, Princess Diana, he said, Most of my memories are of being swarmed by photographer. Rarely did we have a holiday without someone with a camera jumping out of a bush, or something.
Harry said photographers continued to stalk him when he was at school and began dating. The photographers harassed their girlfriends, they said, and their families lives were turned upside down as a result. When he met Meghan, he said, I was terrified of being run over by the media the same media that drove so many people away from me.
Meghan and Harry have long been critic of Britain’s newspapers, and have taken legal action against several British newspapers for intruding on their privacy.
The couple wants to carry on Diana’s inheritance
Harry said Meghan’s news media harassment was reminiscent of the experience of his mother, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 after being chased by photographer. But he also made positive comparisons between his wife and his mother.
What Meghan is, and how she is, she is very similar to my mother, he said in the first episode of the series. She has that same compassion, that same empathy, she has that same confidence, she has that same warmth about herself.
Harry said he also sees himself as continuing Diana’s inheritance. He said, ‘I am my mother’s son. Of his charity work, he said, I wanted to somehow carry on my mother’s torch and try and keep her inheritance alive and make her proud and this will also be proud for me.
Meghan’s mother reaction about race
Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, give a rare interview for the documentary series. In the second episode, she discusses her daughter’s childhood and relationship with Harry. When the couple began receiving negative treatment in the British press, Doria Ragland said, he told Meghan it was because her daughter is mixed-race. You might not want to hear it, but that’s what it’s coming down the pike.
In the third episode of the series, Ragland said she was followed by media photographer. I felt very unsafe. I can’t just go walk my dogs, I can’t just go to work. You know there was always someone waiting for me, following me.
Toronto police fail to help in ‘chase’ of Meghan
Before she and Harry were engaged, and before she even had a security detail, Meghan contacted police in Toronto and asked for help from the media photographer, who were following her, she said in another episode.
I’ll tell the police: If another woman in Toronto were to say to you, ‘I have six adult men sleeping in their cars around my house and following me everywhere, and I’m scared,’ what Don’t you say that was following you? she said.
Meghan said police agreed with her assessment, but told him, There’s really nothing that has led to us dating.
